WHAT ARE WAX MELTS?
Wax melts are also known as "wax tarts" or "tarts". Scented wax melts are made from wax and fragrance oil blends. You simply place them in the warmer, turn it on and they melt down releasing their scent into the air. Wax melts are a great way to fill your home with the fragrance of your choice. They're popular because they are easy to use, and convenient and don't have to be replaced as often as candles or incense do.
INGREDIENTS YOU NEED
RECIPE
-
Add the wax to a double boiler (In a double boiler, water is placed in a pot that sits on the burner. On top of the pot, a glass or metal bowl holds the wax. The steam from the simmering water warms the wax with indirect heat) on medium to high heat for 10-15 minutes.
-
Stick the thermometer in the wax that is now melting and once it is around 63-65 degrees Celsius (refer to the tips section for more information on how to avoid the fragrance in the oil from burning off), take it off the heat and wait for it to cool slightly.
-
After the wax has cooled off a bit, add in a few drops of a single perfume oil or a perfume oil blend of your choice.
-
Add in 2-3 drops of color pigment to give the wax melts an appearance of your preference.
-
Stir to fully incorporate the oils and the pigment in the mixture.
-
Pour the wax mixture into your wax melt silicone mold and wait for a few hours to let them set and fully solidify.
-
Once set, pop them out, light them up on a burner, and sense the pleasant fragrance spread throughout the room within minutes!
HOW TO AVOID THE FRAGRANCE IN THE OIL FROM BURNING OFF
Perfume oils/essential oils have something called a flash point i.e the temperature at which they will burn. If you follow the same temperature for all oils, you'll have mixed results. For example, lemon/lime have very low flash points, like < 50C and if you mix it with wax that's 80-85C, most of the fragrance will burn off. In order to avoid the burning off of the fragrance follow two simple rules :
- a) The wax should be hot enough that it's liquid so you can pour it into your mold, so you can't let it cool too much.
- b) The temperature should be cool enough so that the fragrance doesn't burn off immediately
