Sand Wax

Powdered sand wax that makes a candle without melting: pour the granules into any heat-safe vessel, insert a wick and light it. Sold unscented so you choose the fragrance and colour, it turns a bowl, a glass or a hurricane into a candle in under a minute.

Working with it

Fill the vessel with granules, level the surface, push a wick into the centre and trim it to about 5 mm. Only the wax nearest the flame melts, forming a small pool that sets again as it cools; the rest stays dry and can be poured out and reused. For a scented candle, mix fragrance oil into the granules at up to 5% and leave them in a sealed bag for a day to absorb; for colour, fold in coloured sand wax or a pinch of powdered dye. Choose a vessel with a wide mouth, since the pool spreads outward, and pick a wick for the flame you want rather than for the diameter.
