Palm Wax

A hard, high-melt palm wax that sets with a feathered crystalline pattern across the surface, for pillar candles that need no dye to look finished. It is a natural vegetable wax with a clean, slow burn and a melting point high enough for a hot climate.

Best for

• Pillar and votive candles with a crystal or feather finish
• Container candles in hot climates, where soft waxes sweat
• Blending with soy at 10–20% to raise its melting point

Working with it

Palm wax melts at about 80–86 °C, higher than any other candle wax here, so use a thermometer and a double boiler. Add fragrance oil at 6–8% around 85 °C and pour hot, at roughly 80–85 °C, into a pre-warmed mould; the slower the cooling, the larger and more dramatic the crystal pattern, so wrap the mould in a towel or box it while it sets. Pouring cooler gives a finer, more even grain. Do not stir once the pour has begun to set. It is supplied as a fine powder, which melts quickly and weighs out cleanly. Cure for two to three days and wick a size up from soy.
