Iso E Super is a velvety, transparent woody material — smooth rather than sharp — and one of the most widely used fixatives in modern perfumery.

It lays a soft woody floor under a composition and holds the rest of the formula steady on top of it, which is why it turns up in so many commercial briefs. Pushed higher it stops behaving like a base note and becomes the skin-like, barely-there character it is known for, the effect that made a single-material fragrance commercially viable. Because it is so quiet it blends almost universally: it will smooth a rough woody accord, round out a sharp citrus, and give a floral somewhere to sit.
